Razbojna: Marko Gutić Mižimakov i Paula Tončić

Razbojna emerged as an open-ended, unfinished process of encounters with a context: the city and its surroundings, the space and institution of the museum, our encounter with one another, and new collaborators and friends. The works presented here trace this process, revealing our shared interest in the materiality and temporality of moving images and sound, as well as in things that have aged, become worn, and fallen into decay.

The exhibition is on view at the Kitchen until 30 August 2026.

The process began with a durational performance during which, over the course of two weeks, we remained in continuous contact through a pair of walkie-talkies. The devices were left switched on at all times, allowing us to stay connected across distance while also accidentally intercepting other people’s conversations, messages, and signals, just as they could unexpectedly intercept ours. Chance, together with the related notion of the “sign,” became one of the guiding elements we embraced throughout the process.

Fragments of this extended intimate performance were shaped into a sound work in which the resonant static of the walkie-talkies collages together conversations, moments of play, found historical demographic data, and a brief anecdote about Fiorello La Guardia, the mayor of New York, who spent several years in Rijeka at the beginning of the twentieth century. His eyes, together with those of our unnamed colour-blind friend, emerge from this dense sonic landscape, surveying the stripped-back space of the MMSU Kitchen.

We gave this period the melodic name Razbojna, after the physical location itself: a place of leisure, fleeting anonymous encounters, and long, beautiful summer vistas.

Marko Gutić Mižimakov (b. 1992.) is a visual, performance and text-based artist living between Brussels and Zagreb. They are interested in shaping sensory materials through intimate, collaborative and social processes.Together with Paula Tončić, they participated in the Kamov Artist Residency at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, awarded as part of the 37th Youth Salon Prize.

Paula Tončić (b.1997, Zagreb) is a visual artist based in Berlin. Her practice investigates archiving, materiality, and the boundaries between reality and fiction. Her work She Plays with a Knife received the Grand Prix at the 37th Youth Salon. Together with Marko Gutić Mižimakov, she participated in the Kamov Artist Residency at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka.
