KLUB 24 / “Meet new neighbours” in May and June

1.5.–12.6.2026.

Meet new neighbours is a program of workshops and gatherings developed by Klub 24, an informal collective of female students from Rijeka formed within the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, in collaboration with the Student Cultural Centre in Rijeka. The programs are conceived as a meeting place for the local community and new fellow citizens who have come to Rijeka for studies, work, or personal reasons.

The workshops are held once a month and are conceived as open, participatory meetings through creative activities: making DIY graphics about memories of home, cooking together using hybrid recipes, translating songs, creating fanzines, and organizing informal gatherings such as pub quizzes. In May and June, Klub 24 has prepared three events: a May Day celebration, a pub quiz, and a karaoke night!

Chana masala: communal cooking and dinner at 6 PM
As part of the May 1st celebration in Park Mlaka: at a historic site of workers’ struggle (4–10 PM)

The Council of the Mlaka Local Committee and the student association Initiative for Cultural Studies, in cooperation with the association Filmaktiv, the Club 24 project, and the Trade Union of Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia, invite citizens to celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1st in Park Mlaka (Krešimirova St. 60, Rijeka), from 4 PM to 10 PM. This free program for all generations, featuring cultural, artistic, and educational activities, brings the May Day celebration back to the place where thousands of workers gathered as early as 1903. Park Mlaka was once a center of social life and workers’ assemblies, and this year we additionally mark 100 years since the ban on class-based trade unions and 120 years since the general strike in Rijeka.

Club 24 is organizing a communal cooking session and dinner starting at 6 PM. Visitors will be able to join a shared meal featuring chana masala, prepared for everyone by Dr. Kevin Kenjar, an Austrian-American linguistic and cultural anthropologist. The dish is made using ingredients from the Spicy Peacock store, further emphasizing the importance of sharing food, togetherness, and solidarity.

We invite all workers, as well as all interested citizens, to join us — bring blankets, folding chairs, or hammocks and enjoy a shared May Day gathering in the park. Admission and all activities are free. See you there!
